| well i don't know, i am not a big fan of Mahatma Gandhi, but i do follow some of his sayings and teachings. as far as the the things you pointed out in his biography , may be he was trying to get a control over his senses. He always believed in soul and Moksha (Nirvana) In Hindu mythology and Hindu values and teachings, the 5 senses. One can attain Moksha only if he/she gets full control over his 5 senses which are responsible for plunging a human into darkness. That way i think he was trying to get a good control over himself, cause don't forget he was a leader in the Freedom Fighting Campaign of India.
