It's up to parents to preach abstinence primarily if they choose to. Schools should merely tell students that refraining from sexual activity is a way to avoid STDs and accidental pregnancy. Abstinence-only education is dangerous because it's not safe sex education. Some people don't have a problem with total abstinence because they have no sex drive. That's true for about 1% of the population. |

We decided to talk about should sex education for middle school student be mandatory for about a month or 2 long class. | I would guess that the school would be teaching them the very basics, and not things like masturbation and oral sex. Are you sure that you're right about the ages? In the U.S. 3rd graders are 8. I would say 6 is quite young. 8 isn't much better, but I think they probably do it because girls get their periods younger and younger now and I would imagine it to be quite terrifying for an uninformed 8 year old... ?? We learned the birds and the bees in fourth grade, but the class was separated out so the boys went into a classroom with a couple male teachers and the girls were in a classroom with a couple female teachers. We had a "sex ed" lesson once a year after that, but we were never taught about things like masturbation and oral sex. Maybe it is different where you are, but I would hope that they would be focusing on the "need to know" information and not on the extras. ;) Talk about information overload for a guy! |
